Walter J Newton

Walter Joseph Newton, CPA, of Homewood, died peacefully on Tuesday, Oct. 27, in the arms of Mary Eileen, nee Malatesta, his wife of 66 years. Wally was the loving father of 11, grandfather of 14 and great grandfather of one. From 1958 until 1973, he was part of the original administration of the Illinois State Toll Highway Commission, serving as its Director of Finance. Then, with Mary Eileen, he founded the current Loop CPA firm Walter J. Newton & Co. Wally was born Oct. 17, 1922 in Mimico, Canada and moved to Evanston at the age of two. He attended St. Nicholas grammar and St. George High Schools and Loyola University. In 1951, returned with his young family to the house in which he grew up, having purchased it from his parents, Kate and John Newton. Nine children later, the three bedroom house was a bit crowded, so the family moved to a much larger home in Oak Park. In addition to Mary Eileen, his family consisted of his daughters and sons, Diane (Dick) Van Grunsven, Don J., Rev. Stephen P. CSC, Terry, Mary Patrice (Ron) Hestbeck, Jerry, Michael, the late Timothy, Patrick, Sheila (Steve) Slifka and Maureen (Dave) Winfrey. Timothy preceded him in death by one month. He was a very caring grandfather to Greg, Michelle and Cheryl (Thomas Fondano) Van Grunsven, Kelly, Terry Jr. and Kristin Newton, Erin (Justin) Harer and Laura Hestbeck, Kyle, Shannon, Megan and Brandon Slifka and Kayla and Mara Winfrey. His much loved great-granddaughter is Isabelle Harer. Other survivors include his brother, Robert (Maryanne); sisters, Mary (the late Art) Maggi and Betty (the late Jack) Hannon; his sister-in-law, Kay (Terry) Hallagan; and his beloved University of Notre Dame football team.
